Area of work

Flooring

The largest surface in any building and the one everybody touches. Supplied and installed in homes, offices, restaurants, hotels and showrooms across South Africa.

Residential

Species and board width picked for the room, laid cleanly around your family. Warmer than tile, and repairable for decades.

Commercial

Harder species and commercial-grade sealers, to a programme that keeps your doors open — including after hours.

Hardwood

Rhodesian teak, kiaat, balau, garapa and oak. Matching the timber to the room and the sub-floor is half the job.

Solid wood

One piece of hardwood right through, so it can be resealed again and again — the floor your children could still refinish.

Engineered

Real hardwood on a stable core. Our usual recommendation over screed and underfloor heating — ask to see the cross-section.

Parquet & pattern

Blocks, herringbone, chevron and borders, in new timber or reclaimed parquet. Pattern work lives or dies on the setting out.

What it involves

  • Free site measureSub-floor checked, moisture readings taken
  • SpecificationSpecies, grade, board width and finish
  • Sub-floor preparationLevelling and, where needed, damp-proofing
  • AcclimatisationTimber settles on site before it is laid

Where it goes

  • Living & dining rooms
  • Bedrooms
  • Passages & entrance halls
  • Staircases & landings
  • Open-plan kitchens
  • Offices & co-working

Why Impi Teak. You deal with people who install timber every day, not a salesperson with a sample book — including when the cheaper option is the better call. Two decades in commercial buildings also means we handle the parts that are not about timber: sequencing, site access, paperwork a facilities manager can file.

Sales & restoration

Reclaimed parquet

Reclaimed parquet flooring, supplied and restored. We sell selected reclaimed blocks and bring worn or damaged floors back — keeping the character the timber already earned.

Reclaimed parquet for sale

Salvaged blocks — often Rhodesian teak, kiaat or saligna — sorted and graded in the workshop. Stock is finite and no two lots match.

Restoration & refurbishment

Blocks re-fixed, gaps closed from matched stock, the floor brought back level. The character is the one thing that cannot be replaced.

Preparation & finishing

Sanding taken back only as far as the block can afford. Hardwax oil for a matt grain, lacquer where the room takes traffic.

What it involves

  • SelectionBlocks sorted, cleaned and graded by species and thickness
  • Free site measureSub-floor checked, moisture readings taken
  • Setting outPattern squared to the room before a block is fixed
  • Repair & replacementLoose blocks re-fixed, gaps closed from matched stock

Where it goes

  • Period & heritage homes
  • Living & dining rooms
  • Entrance halls & passages
  • Bedrooms & studies
  • Restaurants & coffee shops
  • Boutiques & showrooms

Why Impi Teak. Reclaimed timber is unforgiving: the blocks are old, thicknesses vary, and there is no second delivery if you run short. We sort our own stock, set out before we fix, and sand no deeper than the block can afford — judgement that comes from twenty years of working with old timber.

Restoration

Sanding, sealing, repairs and maintenance. Keeping existing floors alive has been core to this business from the beginning.

Sanded and sealed parquet · Pretoria

Sanding & sealing

Back to bare timber and resealed — a fraction of the cost of replacement, and usually better looking than new.

Repairs & re-fixing

Loose blocks re-fixed, water damage cut out, planks replaced board by board. Missing blocks come from our own reclaimed stock, so repairs match.

Deck repairs & re-oiling

Cleaned back, boards replaced, fixings checked, the surface re-oiled. Ask about re-oiling intervals before you choose a finish.

What it involves

  • AssessmentHow much thickness is left, and which blocks are worth saving
  • Dust-controlled sandingExtraction on every machine
  • RepairsRe-fixing, filling, board replacement
  • FinishingLacquer, hardwax oil or penetrating oil

Where it goes

  • Parquet under old carpet
  • Forty-year-old block floors
  • Water-damaged rooms
  • Tired sealed floors
  • Pre-sale refreshes
  • Weathered decks

Why Impi Teak. Restoring takes a different skill set to laying new boards — knowing how much thickness is left, and which blocks are worth saving. We will tell you honestly when replacement is the wiser spend.

Area of work

Decking

Pool surrounds, patios, braai areas, walkways and elevated decks — designed and built on substructures that stay square and solid long after the novelty wears off.

Elevated hardwood deck with steel balustrade and timber stair in Johannesburg by Impi Teak Low hardwood deck platform built out onto a lawn in Gauteng
Elevated deck and balustrade · Johannesburg

Ground-level & pool decks

Balau and garapa: dense, durable, stable through big temperature swings. Grooved balau poolside for grip.

Elevated & suspended decks

Spanning slopes that would cost a fortune to pave, with balustrades, steps and the structural detailing height demands.

What it involves

  • SubstructureBearers sized, joists at the right centres, ventilation
  • TreatmentCorrectly treated framing below the boards
  • FixingsStainless or hidden fasteners throughout
  • BoardsBalau or garapa, spaced and set out

Where it goes

  • Pool decks
  • Patios & braai areas
  • Elevated & suspended decks
  • Walkways & steps
  • Balconies
  • Roof terraces

Why Impi Teak. Most deck failures are not timber failures. They are substructure failures: undersized bearers, joists at the wrong centres, poor ventilation or fasteners that rust and stain. We build the part you cannot see properly, then lay hardwood on top.

Area of work

Structures

Beyond flooring: pergolas, carports, balconies, exposed beams, slat ceilings, screens and cladding — designed with you, fabricated in our Midrand workshop, installed by our own teams.

Pergolas & shade structures

Pergolas, carports, slat roofs and garden structures. Components arrive prepared, so disruption is measured in days.

Cladding, screens & ceilings

External cladding, brise-soleil screening, slat ceilings and feature walls. Timber softens contemporary architecture as steel cannot.

Beams & roof structures

Exposed beams, trusses and roof structures for new work and renovations, including commercial spans.

What it involves

  • Design inputWe read a drawing and say early when something will not behave in timber
  • Workshop machiningBeams, treads, stringers and cladding profiles cut to suit
  • Treatment & finishingSealed, stained or oiled before installation where possible
  • InstallationOur own teams, not a subcontracted crew

Where it goes

  • Pergolas & shade structures
  • Carports
  • Balconies & balustrades
  • Exposed beams & trusses
  • Timber screens & slat ceilings
  • External cladding

Why Impi Teak. Having a workshop changes what we can offer. Instead of designing around whatever sections a merchant stocks, we machine to your drawing. Architects work with us because we flag problems early. Homeowners work with us because we can take a photograph and turn it into something buildable at a price that makes sense.

Staircases

Treads, stringers, cladding and open-riser stairs. A staircase is the one piece of timber in a house that is looked at from every angle, and touched every day.

Open-riser hardwood stair · Midrand

Treads & cladding

Hardwood treads over concrete, or a tired staircase clad to match a new floor. Machined to the actual stair.

Open-riser & feature stairs

Hardwood treads on steel stringers, floating flights, and external stairs off raised decks.

What it involves

  • SurveyEvery rise and going measured, because no two stairs are identical
  • MachiningTreads and stringers cut in the workshop
  • FittingSet out so the nosing lines run true from top to bottom
  • FinishingSealed to match the floor it meets

Where it goes

  • Staircase renewals
  • Treads over concrete
  • Open-riser stairs
  • External deck stairs
  • Landings
  • Balustrade timberwork

Why Impi Teak. Stairs are where sloppy setting out shows most. We machine treads and stringers ourselves and detail them to match the floor they run into — one contractor for the timber, so the stair and the floor are specified together.

Area of work

Renovations

When timber work is the heart of the job, appointing four contractors makes little sense. We take on small building renovations where flooring, decking, joinery or cladding leads the project.

Timber-led renovations

Opening a living area under one continuous floor, enclosing a patio, or refreshing a rental before it goes to market.

What it involves

  • One quotationThe whole timber-led scope priced together
  • One programmeRealistic dates for the time the work actually takes
  • One point of accountabilityNo gaps between trades, nobody blaming the other contractor
  • Matched detailingFloor, stairs, deck and cladding specified as one

Where it goes

  • Open-plan conversions
  • Patio enclosures
  • Staircase renewals
  • Guest cottages & flatlets
  • Pre-sale refreshes
  • Rental turnarounds

Why Impi Teak. We are honest about scope. If your project needs a full building contractor we will say so and stay in our lane as the timber specialist. If it is the kind of timber-led renovation we do well, you get one team, one programme and one quotation.
